Cyndi Renee Barto

2014-2023

Once upon a time in Seattle...
8:56 Am, January 22nd 2014 to be exact! A beautiful Princess was born. Weighing 4 pounds, 9 ounces and measuring 19" long. Cyndi Renee Barto went by many names: Buggy, Ninny and Cyndi Lou Who, were just a few. This tiny wonder was no ordinary princess- oh no! There was just something about her... It was as though sunshine came directly from her. Her beautiful soul seemed so large for such a tiny body. Everyone who met her immediately lost a piece of their heart to her. This little princess was a fierce warrior. Having been born with many obstacles that most would just accept as defeat, Cyndi continuously broke every assumption about her over the years. First, she would never roll over. Well, she did so- and topped that by sitting up on her own as well! Then she would never be able to stand or walk unassisted... Princess Cyndi said, "Bet!" She later attended school and proved to them she didn't need a wheelchair to get around!

Cyndi had the pleasure of growing up around her many cousins who doted on, loved and supported her thoroughly. And she was certainly going to keep up with them as much as she could! Living in a shared household with her loving mother, Sylvana Chapman, sweet little sister Gracie, Auntie/Mama Megan Marie Adamson, Uncle Nyle Adamson and her amazing cousins kept Cyndi active, thriving and of course, Sassy!

Throughout many surgeries Princess Cyndi continued to show us the possibilities if we were just able to keep up with her! Unfortunately, on Christmas day 2023 at 12:48pm, Cyndi's warrior heart could no longer recover from the trauma of surgery and she passed, cuddled up in her mother's embrace with daddy Ryan watching over them. Her soul, going to meet those who have gone before her. There is no doubt that she ran unimpeded and joyfully into her Grandmother and namesakes arms to wait for the rest of us. Until then, watch for her fluttering with the butterflies, and remember to celebrate the winter holidays with some extra lights in her honor. How lucky were we to be a part of Cyndi's life?

Dr. Jennifer Beth Mazer, 50, died unexpectedly on February 1, 2022, in Greensboro, North Carolina, after suffering an aortic dissection. She was welcomed into Heaven by her father, Charles, who preceded her in death by almost 20 years.

Beth was born on December 31, 1971, in Lubbock, Texas, but from age 8 months was raised in Texarkana, TX. She attended Texas High, completed a BS in biology at Austin College, and went to medical school at the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio. Born with Turner syndrome, a chromosomal condition, she saw pediatric specialists her entire childhood and aspired to help other kids by becoming a pediatrician herself.

She appreciated the simple things in life: riding waves at the beach, a game of Uno, a walk in her neighborhood, a bowl of Blue Bell ice cream, cuddles on the couch with her kids and her cats. She had a loud and infectious laugh; once she started, you just had to join in. She was incredibly stubborn but claimed to have inherited that from her mom. (It served them both well.) She was a faithful Methodist and prayed for anyone with any burden.

Beth is survived by her husband, Jerry Hooper, and her children, Kayden (11), Katie (11), and Gracie (8) Hooper; her mother, Barbara Hampton; her sister and family, Sarah, Richard, Eli, and Abram Zink; her aunt and uncle, Carol Scott and Christian Pease; and her cousin, Cami Pease.

For her entire life she persevered through major surgeries, including kidney reconstruction and severe spinal curvature, and other orthopedic problems. Throughout all of these circumstances, she maintained a positive attitude and overcame many obstacles, never wavering from her ultimate goals in life. She never backed down from a challenge. When she moved to Raleigh, one of her first considerations was to find a church close by, so it would be an easy drive for her. She discovered North Raleigh United Methodist Church, where she was welcomed into the Fellowship Sunday School Class, and cared for by them and the Carewriters even after she was unable to attend.

Serving others was the goal of Susan's life, whether she was helping a student at the community college, working for a volunteer organization, or assisting friends at the retirement centers where she lived in Goldsboro and Raleigh. While living at Brookdale North Raleigh, she didn't forget that others were serving her, and said, "I know, when I hear a knock at my door, one of my angels will be there."

Though small of stature, she knew how to make her voice heard, and she spent a lifetime determinedly fighting for the rights and recognition of the marginalized. She was a force to be reckoned with and the life of every party. She saw light and love in everyone, and delighted in making people laugh. She was known for her glamour and creative dress. She wore many hats, often at the same time. She loved animals and all creatures. Nythar was a pioneer and a visionary and a woman of many accomplishments. Early on, she was instrumental in the fight to eliminate segregation in newspaper want ads that were divided into "Jobs for Men" or "Jobs for Women." Because she had Turner syndrome, she testified at the Minnesota legislature regarding nuclear power and genetic mutations and participated in breakthrough diabetes studies at the University of Minnesota. The DFL party honored her with a special commendation for her volunteerism and activism. She had a strong Catholic faith, but admired other religions and cultures. She was inspired by Native American culture and studied the Ojibwe language. She danced her heart out at powwows. She was a longtime companion to her mother.

Nythar was proud of her ancestral roots harkening back to Ireland's Sheehy Mountains and the "fierce fighters" who came from there. It was a story she told often. She herself was the sweetest Irish rose there ever was.

Sarah Jane Mize

1997-2016

We lost, Sarah Jane Mize, a beautiful light in our lives, age 19 on Friday, December 16. This came about after a long summer of illness and a final 2 week stay in the CCU at Virginia Beach General ending in Cardiac Arrest due to AOSD (Adult Onset Stills Disease). We did not leave her bedside once and cherish every last moment with her. However we never imagined such an ending could ever happen.

She meant so much to everyone who knew her. She was a beautiful, funny, smart and talented young woman that had her whole life ahead of her. She was a Family Girl through and through. She spent most of her time with her family. She was antisocial media most of the time. She never spent the night with other girls or went to camp. She even got mad at me when she was 6 for “abandoning” her at VCB for half a day. She was homeschooled. She was with us 24/7 99% of here life. She would even go on boring errands with G-ma and mom. Sarah loved all types of music, dancing, singing and acting. She loved all animals and could not pass a pooch without giving it love, The Moon, wolves, nature were close to her heart. She collected Nutcrackers at Christmas, loved the Bohemian style for her wardrobe, collected vinyl records and played them on her turntable. She dreamed of her own home filled with a 70’s style. She had so many books she did not have enough room for them and had read 80% of them. She completely loved her job teaching children about the arts, singing, dancing, and acting. She found out at 14 she medically was unable to have children of her own so her students became “My Kids.” She loved them all and always wanted them to feel important and loved. From a young age to final day she would swing on her childhood swing at night when the moon was out and sing to her hearts content. The Neighbors called her the ‘Swinging Song Bird.’ she for years took private lessons in guitar, piano, song writing and singing. She was as near breaking in to the public with her abilities. She wanted to be. a ‘Star’ Those who knew her knew she was ready. There is not enough room in the world to write how much she meant to us or how much she was loved.

Stephanie Leigh Hockenhull (Bruton)

1970-2016

Stephanie was born on January 12, 1970 to Richard and Sonja Bruton in Downey, California. She was a happy child, despite ongoing health struggles. Her life became even happier when she met Jim. Jim and Stephanie were set up on a blind date in the late 1980's. That date is one of Stephanie's favorite stories: She and her mother stood at the window watching for Jim. After driving up in his big, long, white car, he parked and fixed his hair before coming to the door. That was her first glimpse of Jim. They were married on March 8, 1992. After a series of life difficulties, Jim and Stephanie separated, but that is not the end of their story! God's plan brought them back together and, more importantly, back to Him. They were remarried on August 17, 2013 with Jesus at the center of their lives.

Although Stephanie only had a few best friends, Stephanie's life was an inspiration to countless friends and her sister "butterflies" (others suffering with Turner's Syndrome). Stephanie's faith was a blessing to everyone she encountered. She was a true testament of the grace, love, and restoration available from our God.

Stephanie had fifteen great years at Southwest Airlines. She loved her Arizona Diamondbacks, Arizona Cardinals, Dallas Cowboys, and Dr. Pepper!

"She had a heart valve that would not open. She had only 30 percent of the lung function me and you would have. When they operated on her the first time they found that blood vessels had bypassed the heart and blood was leaking directly into her lungs," Sobieski said.

People who knew her had no idea what she was going through," he said. "She was just a joyous thing. She never said, ‘I can't do this because I don't feel good.' She was a people person. If you met her and spent two minutes with her, you fell in love with her. Her personality just sucked you in."

"We met in October of 1995... in October of 1996 we were married in Ocala," Joseph Reichel said. "I can truly say I married my best friend. We never had a fight. Sarah Rose Horowitz

1964-2008

A teacher, poet, writer, tireless activist and world traveler, Horowitz died March 7, unexpectedly and from unknown causes, in her San Francisco home. She was 44.

Technically, Sarah Rose Horowitz moved slowly, the arthritis in her hip preventing her from walking at even an average pace. And yet: “She moved at the speed of light, she got so much done,” said her mother, Elissa Horowitz. “She was an extraordinary person.” “She was one of most remarkable people I’ve ever known,” said Rabbi Alan Lew. For much of her adult life, Sarah Horowitz lived with impaired hearing and eyesight. But she didn’t let those things stop her from “participating in life to the utmost,” Lew said. “She was just so alive, and never gave an inch to any of those conditions.” Friends and family remember the 4-foot-7 woman as a kind, curious and cheerful person. She was also “wickedly funny,” said younger sister Anne Pilat, with brown eyes that smiled behind wire-rimmed glasses and thick, honey-blonde hair framing her face. Even though she had a hard time finding clothes to fit her small frame, she was always stylish, accessorizing her outfits with colorful scarves, hats and jewelry.

She grew up in Berkeley and graduated from Berkeley High School. After earning creative writing degrees at San Francisco State University and the University of San Francisco, she published numerous poems and short stories in literary journals. She also worked as a freelance writer for S.F. Weekly and the Jewish Bulletin (now j.). She wrote a novel several years ago; her mom hopes to publish it posthumously. Eventually, Horowitz earned another graduate degree, this time in special education from S.F. State, so she could work with autistic children in the San Francisco public schools. “She thought of every person as a full human being, no matter how they were in life,” her mother said. “She was their champion.” But education and the written word accounted for only half of Horowitz’ passion. She was also a crusader for human rights and an observant Jew.

Horowitz is survived by parents Elissa and David Horowitz, sister Anne Pilat and brothers Jonathon Daniel and Benjamin Horowitz.
